Modern Dance Classes
Modern dance changed what movement could mean — transforming dance from pure entertainment into a serious art form capable of telling stories no other medium can. At Hooked On Dance in Randburg, we teach it with that same bold spirit.
Movement that speaks when words fall short
Modern dance was born from an act of rebellion. In the early twentieth century, pioneers like Isadora Duncan and Martha Graham rejected the rigid vocabulary of classical ballet and asked a radical question: what if the body could move the way it actually feels? The result was a discipline rooted in breath, gravity, contraction, and release — one that gave dance the power to explore the full range of human emotion and experience.
At Hooked On Dance, modern dance is taught as both a physical and an intellectual discipline. Students learn to use their bodies as instruments of expression, developing strength, flexibility, and spatial awareness alongside a genuine understanding of how movement communicates. It is a style that rewards curiosity and grows with every dancer who commits to it.
Classes for every stage of the journey
Level 01
Foundation
For students aged 7–12 discovering modern dance for the first time. Classes introduce the core principles of the Graham and Limon techniques — breath, contraction, release, and fall — in a playful, exploratory environment that makes every lesson feel like a creative adventure.
Level 02
Intermediate
For students aged 12–16 who are ready to go beyond the basics. Classes develop technical range and expressive depth — exploring phrase work, dynamic contrast, and the relationship between music and movement in ways that challenge both the body and the imagination.
Level 03
Advanced & Performance
Intensive training for committed dancers aged 16 and up. Students work on full-length works for Eisteddfods and our annual showcase, engage with the history and theory of the modern tradition, and develop a personal movement language that is unmistakably their own.
